Apologizing for Fitness
Today’s Conversation
Person: “What did you do this weekend?”
Me: “Oh, I studied a little bit and relaxed and ran a race on Sunday.”
Person: “How long was your race?”
Me: “A 15k. About 9 miles.”
Person: “…you ran 10 miles this weekend?” (in a tone of great surprise)
Me: “Well, it wasn’t a great run and my pace was kind of off and it was pretty windy and I could have done better and it was really long for me anyway, so…”
CUT!!
Wait Why do I feel like I have to apologize for my fitness achievements? When talking to others about exercise, I find I put myself down as if I might hurt someone’s feelings and feel bad about taking care of my body when others might not take as good care of theirs. I need to stop that and feel proud of what I’ve done!
Anyone else had a situation like that?

I completely understand. I feel that way even when I talk about upcoming races

Yes, in fact. I sometimes feel like I need to be embarassed and shy about running. It makes no sense to be ashamed, though!
